Slow Speed
If you feel your connection speed is slow please go to www.speedtester.bt.com and complete 3 tests.
Home2000 Fixed Rate service (IP Stream 512k/1Mb/2Mb)
BT have set out parameters of acceptable speeds for the IP Stream services, please see below. From this you can see that if you have a 2Mb 50:1 service BT believe that speeds between 400Kbps and 2Mb are acceptable therefore we would be unable to raise a fault to BT until the speed dropped below 400Kbps.
| End User Product Type | Downstream IP throughput range |
|---|---|
| BT IPstream Home 250 | 50-250kbit/s |
| BT IPstream 500 or BT IPstream Home 500 | 100-500kbit/s |
| BT IPstream 500 or BT IPstream Home | 500 100-500kbit/s |
| BT IPstream Home 1000 | 200-1000kbit/s |
| BT IPstream Home 2000 | 400-2000kbit/s |
| BT IPstream Office 500 | 200-500kbit/s |
| BT IPstream Office 1000 | 400-1000kbit/s |
| BT IPstream Office 2000 | 800-2000kbit/s |
Before reporting a slow speed fault to IDNet you should ensure that there is nothing in your premises that could be causing the issue.
- Complete full virus and spy ware scans on all PC's/Laptops using the connection
- Disable any file sharing or P2P software
- Disconnect all devices from the phone sockets in the premises except the filter and router and retest the speed.
- Where possible try an alternative modem/router, is there any change to the speed?
Slow Speed: Up to 8Mb
DSL Max services are constantly monitored by the exchange equipment and speeds are altered to ensure you receive the most stable service possible. If your connection looses sync the Profile will be dropped reducing your speeds in an attempt to stabilise your connection, once the connection is stable again the profile will be recalculated improving the speeds experienced. If your speeds are slow and you know the connection has been intermittent please work through the section entitled Intermittent Connection.
If your throughput speed has been poor for a matter of days and you have noticed no drops in connection your profile may be stuck. Look at the results from the speed test, if the Profile is in line with the Sync rate you are receiving the correct throughput speeds, however if the Profile is inconsistent with the Sync rate it may have become stuck, in cases like this we may be able to intervene and have the Profile manually altered for you.
To ensure you receive the best possible speeds it is recommended that you have your router plugged directly into the BT master socket with BT approved micro filters or NTE-5 face plates and always ensure your PC is free from viruses and spy ware.
